Snow Expected for Groundhog Day
Whatever Punxsutawney Phil and his friends say, winter weather could snarl Super Bowl travel.
The experts at AccuWeather are reporting that the Northeast may get more snow on Groundhog Day. https://www.accuweather.com/en/weather-news/more-snow-may-target-northeastern-us-on-groundhog-day/70003979 Depending on how heavy the snowfall may be, Punxsutawney Phil and his friends might be tempted to just stay in their burrows leaving the forecasting to folks like Kristina Pydynowski, AccuWeather senior meteorologist, who says, “After snow sweeps over parts of the Northeast Monday into Tuesday, the potential exists for a more far-reaching swath of snow to arrive later in the week with frigid air to follow.”
Groundhog Day is Friday, February 2. Pydynowski expects to the forecast to become clearer in the coming days but warns that there’s a chance “the storm can lay enough snow to shovel or plow and cause disruptions during the first two days of February.”
The storm has the potential to disrupt not only the groundhogs but also the travel plans of fans heading to Minnesota for the Super Bowl on Sunday, February 4.
According to AccuWeather, folks from St. Louis to Cincinnati and onto Pittsburgh, Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, New York City and Boston could face slippery travel, flight cancellations, and school closures if the storm develops to its full potential.
“Such a storm, if it materializes, may affect flights in the Interstate 95 corridor for fans heading to Minnesota for the Super Bowl,” AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Alex Sosnowski said. “Some of the details that need to be hammered out with this storm include how strong the storm will be, how fast it will move and how far south the cold air will get,” he said.
As for Punxsutawney Phil, there may be snow on the ground when he pops his head out of his burrow – which is located in Gobbler’s Knob, Pennsylvania – but that’s not what might determine his prediction. “Punxsutawney Phil will have a hard time seeing his shadow with clouds and perhaps even some snow in the air Friday morning,” AccuWeather Meteorologist Brian Thompson said.
That’s a good thing, though! According to tradition, if the groundhog sees his shadow you’ll have to endure six more weeks of winter. In years when he doesn’t see his shadow, an early spring can be expected. Most years (13 out of the last 17), Phil’s shadow greets him when he emerges from his burrow, but there’s always hope!
