What is HTML? Say What!
In a survey The Los Angeles Times reported on a few years ago, 11 percent of the people surveyed said they thought HTML was a sexually transmitted disease. Boy were they wrong! HTML is the standard computer language used to create websites – like the one you’re reading.
The survey, which was conducted by Vouchercloud.net, which has vouchers, coupons, discount codes and other consumer offers from an impressive assortment of retailers and businesses, revealed a number of other humorous findings – including this entertaining nugget: 23 percent of study respondents said an MP3 was a robot from Star Wars, rather than an audio file.
Not everything in the study was funny, though – especially not from the perspective of businesses hoping to strengthen their online marketing efforts. As the Los Angeles Times reported, 77 percent of the survey’s participants didn’t know what SEO means. The term stands for Search-Engine Optimization.
If your company has a website that you want prospective customers to visit, then understanding how search engine optimization works is critical to your success!
Think about it… if you’re looking for something – it could be anything from thin crust pizza with all the toppings to a flock of goats – the first thing just about everybody does these days is to do an online search. If you’re searching from your computer, you’re instantly directed to a screen that displays 10 of what is probably a dizzying number of options for you to explore.
When you’re searching for something, how many times have you gone beyond that first screen with 10 listings to find what you’re looking for? If you’re like most of us, you may click on a few of the choices that come up in the first 10 responses to your search. You might have made it to the second screen, showing the next 10 responses, but you have probably never gone on to see what the 57th, 89th or 121st choice might be.
In other words, if you have a restaurant specializing in thin crust pizza or if you have a flock of goats to sell, you want your website to show up in those first 10 listings.
That’s where an SEO company like SEOJames.com comes in!

And now that we’ve cleared that up, let’s get back to that survey done by Vouchercloud.net, which produced some other entertaining results, including:
- 42 percent of those surveyed identified a “motherboard” as “the deck of a cruise ship.” It’s actually a circuit board that holds many of the key components of a computer.
- 27 percent of survey respondents thought a “gigabyte” was a South American insect instead of a measurement unit for the storage capacity of an electronic device.
- 18 percent thought “Blu-ray” referred to a marine animal instead of a type of DVD used to store high-definition videos.
- Another 15 percent thought “software” was comfy clothes not computer programs.
