Our SEO company is in one of the best!
We are a nation of risk-takers. Well, at least that’s the theory some folks subscribe to. The idea is that the people who first settled in America were the kind of people willing to take a chance – and perhaps the kind looking for a little adventure. There’s a name for these kind of people – they are Type T personalities.
You’re probably familiar with Type A personalities (maybe way too familiar!). Well, Type Ts are another category. “The Type T personality has been described as a personality dimension referring to individual differences in stimulation seeking, excitement seeking, thrill seeking, arousal seeking, and risk taking,” the National Center for Biotechnology Information, U.S. National Library of Medicine reports.
So, let’s assume that the majority of settlers who came to this country seeking a better life are Type T personalities. Some would then theorize that their descendants would be more likely to be Type Ts as well. Not being in the business of proving or disproving hypotheses, we don’t know if that’s a valid conclusion. The fact that 15 million Americans are now self-employed might lend credence to the idea, though.
In the 21st century, the new horizons we cast our eyes toward are found in the entrepreneurial sphere rather than across an ocean.
If you have inherited a Type T personality from your esteemed, risk-taking ancestors, you may be interested in WalletHub’s ranking of 2018’s Best Large Cities to Start a Business.
In order to provide a resource for aspiring entrepreneurs — from restauranteurs to cybersecurity consultants, WalletHub compared the relative startup opportunities that exist in more than 180 U.S. cities. They looked at 19 key metrics, ranging from five-year business-survival rate to office-space affordability.
Oklahoma City topped the list in terms of overall rankings, followed by Austin, Texas; Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Missoula, Montana; and Durham, North Carolina. As a Florida SEO company, we were pleased to see several cities from the Sunshine State on the list. Miami came in at number 14, followed by Orlando at 15. Port St. Lucie, Florida – which is about an hour north of SEOJames’ offices in Boca Raton – shows up at number 22. Tampa was 26th.
Count the folks at WalletHub among those who believe that size does, indeed, matter – at least when it comes to choosing where to launch a startup. “As many veteran entrepreneurs — and failed startups — understand well, bigger is not always better,” they report. “A city with a smaller population can offer a greater chance of success, depending on an entrepreneur’s type of business and personal preferences.”
Holland, Michigan; St. George, Utah and Aberdeen, South Dakota top their list of Best Small Cities to Start a Business.
“Every small city offers unique advantages and disadvantages to new business owners. Some benefits include lower overhead costs, stronger relationships with customers and the potential to become a big fish in a little pond. But there are plenty of drawbacks, too,” WalletHub says. “For one, entrepreneurs who want to build a large professional network aren’t likely to make as many connections in a town with fewer residents. Other restrictions might include limited industry options, a less diverse customer base, and difficulty attracting and keeping top talent.”
When he wanted to start an SEO company in Florida, James McCauley, the president and CEO of SEOJames, chose Boca Raton – which comes in at number 28 on WalletHub’s list of Best Small Cities to Start a Business.
